She Accepted Divorce, He Panicked

262 Edge Of Truth

"Wait, Adrian!" Scar chases after Adrian, but Sebastian stops her.noveldrama

"It's okay, he wouldn't know," Sebastian sits up, a hand pressing on his broken ribs to limit its movement, "Three of them is a start. I'm sure the police are working on it." Scar stares at him with disbelief.

"They almost killed us! They almost killed YOU! How could you be so calm about it? You heard Adrian. He said THE three guys, not just three guys. He was under the impression that there were only three of them! The other two got away and they would probably come back for us!"

"Brilliant deduction," The man teases her, adjusting his body into a more comfortable position on his own, slowly settling in, "And you deem them having only five people because...?"

Scar is speechless. She can't know. There would be a whole gang working for Jack Fuller. And the police's attitude is actually clear: they are not super into it. They didn't come to the rescue until way later than they were supposed to be, and now they let two people escape when they should have seen them beating Sebastian up.

Does Jack Fuller really have that kind of energy?

"I'm just surprised that he could pull this off..." Scar mumbles, and suddenly feels powerless. She had been feeling like that in front of Jack Fuller all her life. She thought now with Silco on her side she could finally feel safer, but today's things crashed her faith. "I mean, it's you, Sebastian Knight, and your name couldn't even outweigh a few dollars Jack Fuller gives them..." Scar frowns, the familiar dark feeling gulping her up bit by bit, "Maybe the only way out is just..."

Break the law and take the devils back to hell herself.

"It's not Jack Fuller," Sebastian's voice replaces her depression with anger.

Escaping death together, Scar slipped back into trusting Sebastian as her ally, only to be snapped out of that illusion again. Of course it wasn't Jack Fuller. Even if Jack Fuller had gone to that warehouse and landed his feet on Sebastian's back himself, Sebastian would still not have accused his father-in-law-to-be.

"The average response time in the city is 10 minutes," Noticing Scar's anger, Sebastian explains with a calming voice, "even adding the extra distance, they should have reached us 20 or 30 minutes. It took them 43 minutes."

"And you know this because?" Scar throws that question with sarcasm.

The man ignores her tone, answering patiently: "I asked for the time when they put me in the ambulance."

Speechless again, Scar rolls her eyes with a low grumble: "That proves nothing."

"It proves that they would rather offend me than offend whoever tried to slow them down," Sebastian lets out a light laugh at her, "and Jack Fuller does not have that kind of influence."

When was the last time that they

could have some sort of peaceful conversation like this? Sebastian can't seem to remember. It feels like a lifetime away. There was a time when he could have her full attention whenever and wherever, and he never cherished that opportunity until he lost it.

"It takes someone more powerful than me. You see that, don't you? Scar."

The last word makes Scar flinch as if it stings her. She changed her name officially to Scar Green. She didn't want to keep the name the Fullers gave her. She wanted to come back anew.

But Sebastian used to call her just

like that, and it brings up pain. Pain

f

that she has buried deep in her heart. It's a sensation she didn't think she could have again -- after the hellish five years, all emotions feel numb to her. en

But recently they are all waking up. Slowly, but firmly.

She is terrified of that. Love is pain. She learned that the hard way.

"You are the MOST powerful that I have a feud with," Scar glares at him, fire in her eyes and teeth clenched.

"That guy, Silco..." Sebastian ignores her doubt, asking slowly as he observes her carefully, "What do you think of him?"

"The best among any of you," Scar blurts without even a blink.

She has her doubts about Silco, but that's her problem. She only suspects that this thing might have something to do with Silco because that man is powerful enough to do it. That's no evidence to pin any crime on anyone. Besides, between Sebastian and Silco, she would rather trust the man who hasn't been proven to have hurt her.

Sebastian's eyes dim. He lowers his eyes, wants not to let her see the hurtful look in them.

"What if--"

Knock knock.

Two slow, calm, polite, very restrained knocks cut him off.

Scar darts her eyes over, watching the door open slowly as Silco's cane sticks in before him.

"Sorry to be a bother but..." Silco steps in, landing his eyes on Scar as he speaks with not the usual gentle tone but a rather cold one, "...could you give us a moment, princess?"
