Selene's expression darkened noticeably, her naturally pale complexion turning even more ashen. The hand holding her juice trembled slightly.noveldrama
"I'm sorry, I-I didn't mean to," she stammered, her voice fragile and pitiful, as though my words had wounded her deeply.
But I didn't stop. Now that I'd started, I continued, "Maybe you didn't mean to, but your actions have still affected us. Mrs. Harlow, if it was unintentional, just be more mindful in the future. There's no need to apologize."
"If Liam were still here, I wouldn't bother Logan," Selene murmured softly, tears streaming down her face again. There's a saying that women are like water. Looking at her now, I could see why that saying existed. Her way with words always seemed to render me momentarily speechless.
"Elaine." She looked at me with tear-filled eyes that shimmered like glass. "The only reason I contact Logan is because Liam asked him to take care of me before he passed away. Logan agreed to it." Her fingers absently fidgeted with the cup in her hands. "If not for that, I wouldn't have reached out to him."
She was explaining herself, but at the same time subtly trying to provoke
1. me.
We were all adults here; everyone had their own motives.
"Mrs. Harlow, Logan promised your late husband he'd look after you, but that care needs boundaries. After all, you're alone now. If people see you two together too often, they might start gossiping." I paused briefly, letting my words sink in. "Mrs. Harlow, while Logan may not care about what people say, it would be unfortunate if such rumors involved you-especially since you have a child. Don't you think so?"
She could keep playing the angel; I didn't mind stepping into the role of
saint.
Selene's face visibly fell at my words.

"Elaine, isn't all this because you're worried about Logan taking care of me? Is it that you don't trust him, or are you lacking confidence in yourself?" Her sharp retort hit like a blade, completely at odds with her usual
demeanor.
I looked at her and chuckled softly. So, the "rabbit" finally showed its fangs. It seemed she was done pretending.
Before I could respond, Selene's tears suddenly started falling again.
"Elaine, I'm sorry. If you're still upset, you can hit or scold me. I'll take it. But please, leave my child out of this."
"Huh?" I blinked, confused. When had I mentioned her child?
Selene abruptly stood up, her movements deliberate. With her hands resting on her stomach, she now looked every bit the vulnerable pregnant woman.
Just then, Logan strode over and grabbed her arm.
This was the third time tonight he'd stopped her from leaving.
His dark eyes glared at me, filled with anger. "Elaine, what are you doing?" he demanded through gritted teeth.
That's when I finally understood why Selene had suddenly brought up her child. She was falling back on tired clichés straight out of a soap opera. "What did I do?" I asked, my voice calm despite the coldness in his eyes. Still, I felt something inside me crack. He hadn't even asked for my side of the story before jumping to
conclusions. Ten years together, and my history with him didn't even come close to Selene's little games.
"Logan, don't fight with her," Selene said, tugging at his sleeve. "It's my fault. I know I'm always troubling you, taking up your time. I'm the one in the wrong..."
Her words weren't meant to calm things down-they were pouring gasoline on the fire.

"Logan, I'm sorry for being a burden to you." Selene pulled away from his grip and rushed toward the door.
"Selene!" Logan called out, immediately chasing after her.
"Logan." I stopped him, my voice steady. "My clothes are dirty."
At my words, he froze for a moment and glanced at the hand he'd fo rgotten was holding mine. Only then did he seem to remember I was on my period.
A moment later, he placed the bag of sanitary pads he'd bought for me onto the table and shrugged off his jacket. "Elaine, Selene's pregnant and emotionally fragile. I can't let anything happen to her." With that, he tossed his jacket at me and turned to leave. "Logan, if you walk out that door, we're done."
My words made him pause mid-step.
