Chapter 645
Selena walked over to her son's bedside, adjusting his IV drip and tucking the blanket snugly around him. Outside, the storm was still raging, thunder rolling on endlessly. She paused for a moment before saying, "It's nice, but..."
If she had never met Everett, never crossed paths with such a mesmerizing young man in her youth, she might have found herself drawn to Dr. Campbell. But love never really makes sense, does it?
She left her thought unfinished, but Ava caught on. This heartbreak wasn't something Selena would easily shake off. Sure, she'd divorced her husband, but moving on is never that straightforward. Otherwise, she would've just called him earlier, no hesitation.noveldrama
Ava figured it was something to do with what Ms. Joy said that afternoon. It must've hit a nerve. Ms. Joy, who claimed to be some PR whiz, really knew how to push buttons!
Sensing the awkwardness, Ava wisely shifted the conversation, noticing it was nearly four o'clock. She quickly suggested, "Ma'am, I can stay here. You're pregnant and shouldn't be wearing yourself out. Let me call you a cab so you can head home and get some rest."
But Selena shook her head. "I can't relax until his fever's come down."
"But think about the baby, if not for yourself," Ava insisted gently.
Knowing Selena's child always came first, Ava compromised, "At least take a break on the couch. I'll wake you if anything happens."
Selena didn't put up a fight. She bent down, kissed her son's warm cheek, and lay down on the couch. Yet, her sleep was anything but peaceful. Her mind was a whirlwind of images, leaving her restless and anxious. Furrowing her brow, she called out softly, "Ava, could you get me some water?"
Footsteps approached, and then someone gently helped her sit up, resting her against a broad chest. A glass of water was brought to her lips. Selena instinctively took a few sips. Then, realizing something was off, she quickly opened her eyes.
She was still in the hospital room,
but the person in front of her wasn't Ava-it was Everett! And she was nestled in his arms. Selena's expression turned cool, and she pushed herself upright, her voice raspy, "Where's Ava?" Everett's dark eyes were fixed on her, filled with a longing that wasn't fazed by her cold demeanor. He put the glass aside and replied softly. "Ava's older now and couldn't stay up all night. She's resting outside."
Meanwhile, out in the hallway, Ava was reluctantly seated on a bench, forced to take a break. She shot a glare at Bill and Alex, who were keeping an eye on her, and snapped, "Helping him with his schemes, are you?"
Bill's face was as unreadable as ever. Alex, looking a bit sheepish, offered a nervous smile, "Ava, you've been up all night too. Can I get you something to eat?"
Ava scoffed, "No thanks. I might choke on it."
"He's so concerned for his ex-wife and son that he rushes back right after the divorce, putting on this devoted act-must be addicted to the role."
Alex hesitated for a moment before defensively saying, "Ava, maybe you've got it wrong. Mr. Everett went to France for business."
"I don't buy it!" Ava retorted, spitting out the words before falling silent.
Back in the hospital room. Selena tried to get up to check on her son, but Everett gently held her back. "Don't worry, his fever's gone down."
"It's you I'm worried about," he
continued, his large hand suddenly enveloping hers. "Why are your hands so cold? You need to take care of yourself, not just your son." With that, he held her hands in his, rubbing them to warm them up.
What do you think?
