I froze, my heart hammering.

Is this how I die?

Within that split second, her gun shifted, and she fired.

Someone screamed while people scrambled out of their seats and lowered themselves to the floor. Dominic was already out of his seat, pulling me behind him.

That’s when I saw the waiter on the floor – his white, crisp shirt soaking through with red at the chest area. His face was contorted in pain, but what surprised me was that instead of pain and confusion, the waiter had pure anger in his eyes.

“What’s going on?” Dominic demanded as El approached the wounded man. She scanned him for a second before asking, “Who sent you?”

“Fuck you!” The man fired back and El raised her gun and shot him in the kneecap.

His screams pierced the air as his wolf came to the surface and I saw his elongated teeth and claws. All around us, people rushed to the elevator and staircase in an attempt to escape.

“STUPID BITCH!” The waiter roared, and El fired a second shot at his second kneecap.

El faced us, remorse absent from her features as she sheathed her gun.

“He’s a hired killer.” El stated, and I gaped at her, surprised.

“How did you find out?” Dominic asked.

“The moment you told me about your date, I memorized the faces of all the staff that work here. Beta Zed and I even ran background checks on each of them, too. That’s how I know that this guy,” She pointed at the wounded man. “is not part of the staff.”

“You mean he switched roles with someone?”

El’s expression darkened more. “I wish it were just that, sir.” She swallowed, seemingly upset. “I was told the original staff called in sick, hence, this bastard replacing him. But when I sent people to check on the sick guy…”

El paused, blinking profusely, and for the first time, I saw her eyes water. “They found his body.”

My heart shattered.

“…next to the bodies of his pregnant wife and two kids.”

The world seemed to tilt, so I held on to the edge of the table to sit down.

“Ryn?” Dominic was immediately by my side. “You okay?”

I looked at him, dumbfounded.

Am I okay?

A whole family was just murdered because of me and all my uncle could think to ask is if I’m okay?

I nodded. “I’m fine.” I swallowed, feeling my throat dry up.

Dominic faced El, “Take her home. I’ll deal with the rest.”

“But” El protested.

“No buts!” Dominic’s tone turned harsh. “Apart from you and Z, I don’t trust anyone else right now.”

El sighed before nodding and then she faced me, her expression carrying annoyance. “Let’s go.” She grumbled before dashing past me and I rose to my feet slowly, gave my uncle a small nod, before following after her.

Our elevator ride was quiet and so was our car ride back home, but my mind was a whirlwind of voices. Voices that were like accusing fingers with claws dragging their tips through my heart, making me bleed on the inside.

“This is all your fault!‘

‘If you had died, that family would still be alive!

‘You’re nothing but trouble.

‘Barely stayed a week in the North and you’ve brought death with you.

‘You’re the harbinger of death! Everyone should stay away from you.’

‘You should end your life this time. So no more innocent children have to die!‘

‘Look, even El hates you and it’s only a matter of time before Dominic, your mother and your mates see you for what you are!

With tears in my eyes and shaky hands, I brought out my phone with the intention of texting Theon. But then, I changed my mind. Why do I deserve to be helped when those innocent people died because of me?

The moment we arrived, I alighted from the car and watched it do a U–turn back to whence it came.

Then I turned around and stared at the magnificent house filled with lights. Theon and Miro would be in there waiting for me, probably expecting a happy Ryn and I…I can’t be that for them.

I don’t deserve them.

So I turned around, my feet quickening just like my heartbeat, and I walked until I reached the hostel where Adam was staying.

It didn’t take long for me to find his room and after a double knock, the door swung open and I was met with a shirtless, ripped but horribly scarred Adam.

Somehow he looked hotter in longer hair and a stubble.

“Hi.” I greeted glumly, and Adam’s brows furrowed in concern.

Immediately, he stepped aside to let me in and I entered, suddenly aware that my hands were shaking.

“What’s wrong, Ryn?” Adam asked, closing the door behind us and I had my back turned to him for a minute, contemplating my thoughts before whipping around.

“I need your help. I need you to take me to your parents.”

Adam’s brows flew up as he gawked. “Ryn, are you out of your mind?! My parents want you dead!”

I inhaled sharply. “I know. I still need you to take me to them.”

Adam eyed me warily. “Why?”

I lost all composure and burst into tears. “Because I am tired, Adam! I am so fucking tired of everything! I am tired of fighting! I am tired of looking over my shoulder! I am tired of having my happiness stolen from me.” I sniffled. “I am tired of innocent people dying because of me! It’s exhausting carrying this guilt!” I touched my chest, “…right here in my heart!”

“I can’t sleep! I can’t. I can’t live! I am tired and I want to end it all!” I sobbed, falling to my knees.

“Hey, hey!” Adam came to embrace me. “I understand. Believe me, I do, but there has got to be another way.” noveldrama

“There isn’t!” I pushed back from him, staring into his eyes. “Taking time to find them will lead to more people dying and I can’t wait! I just can’t! So please, for the sake of our friendship, please take me to them.”

Adam sighed. “I don’t know where they are.”

“Those bounty hunters must have had a way to communicate. You can use that route.”

Adam seemed to think about what I said. “We have to make it believable, though.”

I looked around sharply and, after spying his belt on a couch nearby, I got off the floor and went for it. Coming back to Adam, I handed it to him.

“Tie my hands, I’ll pretend to be unconscious. You can snap a picture and send it to them.”

Adam seemed to think again. “How about we go into the woods? I think it’s more believable if they see you on the dirt floor.” “Great! Let’s go!” I began to dash for the door but Adam held my hand, stopping me. I turned around to him. “Are you sure you want to do this?

I gritted my teeth, my jaw set as pure anger flooded my veins. “Yes. I’m not going to your parents to just surrender and die, Adam. I’m going to get justice for all the evil they’ve done, even if it costs me my life. I swear to the goddess, I will kill them all!”
