Chapter 288
He stepped into the room and found Evelyn on her knees, hands drenched in blood, looking utterly lost. Without hesitation, he rushed over to her side.
Upon seeing him, Evelyn managed to say, "Brooks, I killed Dahlia and Charles."
Brooks, unsure of what had unfolded, gently lifted her from the floor, his heart aching for her. It was clear Evelyn had reached her breaking point, and she fainted right there in his arms.
He whisked her back to his place without delay. The family doctor soon arrived to tend to the cut on her forehead. Thankfully, apart from that, she was unharmed. Brooks stayed by her side the whole time, not leaving her for a moment.
Evelyn finally stirred just before noon. She opened her eyes, momentarily bewildered by the unfamiliar room, before slowly turning her head to meet Brooks's concerned gaze.
"You're awake. How are you feeling?" he asked gently.
Evelyn ignored his question, cutting straight to the point. "Are Dahlia and Charles dead?" That was all she cared about right now.
"Charles is still in the ICU, and Dahlia... she's got severe spinal nerve damage. She'll be in a wheelchair for life," he replied.noveldrama
Hearing this, Evelyn didn't feel any relief, just a heavy weight settling in her chest. It seemed fate was still favoring them.
"Evelyn, what went down last night?" Brooks asked, his voice filled with concern. Since she had whispered those words about Dahlia and Charles, Brooks had started looking into it while Evelyn was out cold.
They managed to track down the taxi that had dropped her off near the cemetery the night before, but that area was remote, nestled against the hills, with no surveillance cameras. Only Evelyn and Dahlia knew the full story.
Brooks was genuinely worried about Evelyn. Last night, Dahlia had been on a video call the whole time, keeping tabs to stop Evelyn from reaching out to Brooks. Thinking about it made Evelyn's heart ache, especially when she remembered Charlie's ashes.
She didn't hold back from Brooks, recounting everything that had happened. She knew she had acted rashly but, at the moment, she couldn't help herself.
At the hospital, Dahlia sat in a wheelchair outside the ICU, tears streaming down
her face as she watched Charles lying inside, still unconscious.
"What happened to Charles? How did he end up in the ICU?" Dahlia demanded, grabbing Aiden for answers.
Aiden pressed his lips together, choosing silence. With Mr. Jenkins still unconscious, he figured it was best to keep things quiet, fearing that if Dahlia found out Evelyn was the one who had stabbed him, she'd stir up trouble.
Getting nowhere with Aiden, Dahlia turned to the doctor who had just come out after checking on Charles. She blocked his path, demanding, "Doctor, what's wrong with Charles?"
"Mr. Jenkins's kidney was punctured, resulting in significant blood loss and a coma. But rest assured, we're doing everything we can," the doctor explained.
The mention of a punctured kidney triggered a flash of Evelyn in Dahlia's mind. Last night, instead of breaking down as Dahlia had hoped, Evelyn had gone berserk, pushing Dahlia down the hill in a frenzy aimed to kill.
It dawned on her that Charles, dragged into this mess, was also likely a target of Evelyn's wrath. "Was it Evelyn?" Dahlia turned to Aiden, demanding an answer.
Aiden hesitated, caught off guard, but that brief pause was all Dahlia needed to confirm her suspicions. It was Evelyn, that damn woman, who had lost it and gone after Charles at his home, stabbing him.
How could she dare? Dahlia seethed

with rage. She might not be able to hold Evelyn accountable for pushing her down the hill just yet, but if Evelyn was behind Charles's condition, Dahlia swore she wouldn't let it slide.
