The Day Our Promise Breaks

Chapter 138

Evelyn heard Charles asking about Charlie, and she couldn't help but let out a cold, mocking laugh.

Charles adored Sandy, so he was always attentive to everything concerning her. Evelyn recalled when Sandy had just returned to the country and accidentally got separated from Dahlia in the mall. It was only a matter of minutes, but Charles was so frantic that he nearly called in all his favors to search for her. The whole city was buzzing, all for the sake of finding Sandy. That was when everyone realized Charles wasn't single and he had a daughter.

On the other hand, there was Charlie, who had never been recognized since birth and didn't receive any acknowledgment like Sandy did when she returned.

What about Charlie? How long had it been since Charles last saw her? He could misunderstand her intentions all he wanted. He didn't trust Evelyn because of that incident five years ago, where he thought she had drugged him. He believed she was prone to lying, so he didn't believe her when she said Charlie had passed away and stubbornly insisted she must have hidden Charlie away. He could think whatever he wanted! She no longer cared about his opinion of her.noveldrama

But when it came to Charlie, Evelyn wished Charles could spare even a fraction of the attention he showered on Sandy for Charlie. If he cared even a little bit about Charlie or wanted to see her, he wouldn't be grilling Evelyn; he'd be investigating. If he investigated, he'd know their daughter was really gone and not pointlessly accuse her.

"Evelyn, talk to me!" Charles' demand

came as Evelyn's cold laughter made his expression darken even more, and the anger in his eyes seemed poised to consume her. His grip on her wrist tightened in his fury, nearly crushing her wrist bones. Evelyn winced, biting back the groan that threatened to escape her lips. It hurt, but this physical pain was nothing compared to the ache in her heart. Every time she faced Charles' blatant favoritism toward Sandy and his neglect of their daughter, her heart felt like it was being torn apart.

Charlie was her precious child, cherished and adored since birth. Evelyn was furious, her gaze on Charles growing icier as she coldly asked, "What do you want with Charlie?"

Charles was visibly taken aback for a moment, but his expression quickly returned to normal, his brows furrowing. "I miss her, of course."

"Hmph," Evelyn scoffed again, her

voice dripping with sarcasm as she pressed him further, "Charles, don't you feel a bit hypocritical saying

that? Do you miss Charlie now?met

didn't before, but just when I've decided to be with Brooks?" She continued. "Charles, you don't miss Charlie. It's just your possessiveness kicking in.

"You can't stand seeing me with someone else, and your ego won't allow it. So even if you don't love me, even if deep down you despise me, I'm supposed to be yours for life because we've been together, right? No one else can have me, and even if you tire of me one day, I should stay true to you, right?"

Charles' lips tightened into a thin

line. Evelyn's smirk widened, dripping with mockery. Clearly, she had hit the nail on the head; that was exactly how he thought. More than once, he said that she was his woman. It was all because of his ridiculous possessiveness. He even had the nerve to bring Charlie into it, knowing how much she cared about her dad. He believed that if he could find Charlie and sweet-talk her, she'd definitely take his side.
