Chapter 287 Heading South
"Mrs. Scarlett Smith, what would you like to eat? I can cook something for you... Don't worry too much, Ms. Smith will definitely come back safely. Mr. Michael Smith and Mrs. Emily Smith have already gone to look for her, haven't they?" Lexine tried to comfort Scarlett.
Scarlett said in anger, "Do I need you to tell me this? Get out, get out of here!"
Lexine originally had good intentions, trying to persuade Scarlett to eat something so she wouldn't starve.
But she didn't expect Scarlett to be so ungrateful. Not only did she curse and drive her away, but she also threw a pillow towards the door.
Lexine's face changed instantly, and before leaving, she silently spat towards the door. At that moment, Scarlett was even angrier.
She wasn't angry that Veda had run away from home and was still missing. She was angry at Mason, Emily and the unfair treatment she received in this family.
Scarlett always prided herself on having given birth to a son and a daughter. She felt that everyone in this family should treat her with respect.
But she never expected that because of Mason, the head of the Smith family, her status would plummet. It was bad enough that her own daughter didn't listen to her.
She also had to be humiliated in front of her son and daughter-in-law.
The more she thought about it, the more jealous and resentful she became.
Scarlett's fists clenched tightly, and the hatred spread like vines, tightly wrapping around her, making it impossible for her to break free.
Scarlett wanted to escape this environment, to break free from this cage. She knew there were many problems to solve, but Mason was the first major obstacle.
On the other side, Michael and Emily saw that Veda's location had left Emerald City and was heading south, but the signal gradually disappeared. It seemed she had booked a flight in advance and was now on the plane.
Michael also wanted Andrew to book two tickets.
But it was too late and too rushed. Not only were tonight's tickets sold out, but even most of tomorrow's were gone.
Helplessly, Michael and Emily had to drive through the night. Fortunately, both of them were good drivers, so taking turns wasn't too exhausting.
But Michael knew that Emily coming with him to find Veda was already a big favor. He didn't want to trouble Emily further and knew that the distance between them was too vast now. They were no longer a couple in the true sense.
"I'll drive, you can sleep for a while." Michael said considerately to Emily.
"It's so late, and you've been in meetings all day at the company. Drive to the next service area, and then I'll take over." Emily responded, her eyes still fixed on her phone.
She anxiously watched Veda's location update, but there was no response.
Michael saw this and helplessly pursed his lips. "Veda really made her mind to leave Emerald City, not thinking about how worried Grandpa would be."
"She can't care about that now." Emily suddenly answered seriously. "What?" Michael looked at Emily.
"I mean, having to marry a man she doesn't like and spend a lifetime with him, she can't care about anyone else's feelings now. I understand Veda. Even though she's a wealthy young lady from one of the top families in Emerald City, her whole life has never been under her control."
Emily looked at Michael, and as their eyes met, Michael turned his head away, saying he would focus on driving.
He was actually avoiding Emily's clear, crystal-like eyes.
Emily added, "You too. I know you couldn't control your own life, which is why you married me."
Emily's words left Michael speechless.

He remained silent, focusing on driving. Not long after, he suddenly braked hard, causing them to lurch forward and then back.
"What happened?" Emily accidentally hit the car window, and her right arm was in pain.
"The car seems to have broken down. I'll go check." Michael answered.
They were almost out of Emerald City, but the car broke down halfway.
Michael hurried to check the car, not noticing that Emily was hurt.
Emily had to endure the pain and follow him out.
Michael checked briefly and then told Emily. "The car is indeed broken. I'll call Andrew
to send another one. You wait in the car; it's cold outside."
Emily rarely saw Michael so reliable and considerate.
But thinking about it, he was only like this because she was helping him find Veda. She
lost her feelings and obediently got back in the car.
She didn't know how long had passed, but she fell asleep in the warm car.
When she opened her eyes again, she was in a more spacious car with two more rows
of seats and lots of clothes and food. Emily was surprised and saw Michael still focused on driving.
"What time is it?" Emily asked.
"Noon." Michael replied.
"I slept that long?" Emily opened her mouth in surprise, and Michael smiled. "I've already checked Veda's location. She got off the plane and headed south. She's almost in Everglade City. We're also heading there. I asked Andrew to get a car where you can rest. When we reach the service area, you can adjust the seat and rest. There's food and drinks in the back, everything you need. Or if you want something else, we can stop somewhere to buy it."noveldrama

Michael said everything at once, and Emily didn't know what to say.
She admitted she rarely saw this side of Michael.
But maybe, as she initially thought, Veda's repeated runaways made Michael truly understand what family and responsibility meant to him.
Michael had grown, and Emily was happy.
"I..." Thinking it over, Emily decided to ask about Veda first. "Why would Veda go to Everglade City?"
"I don't know. As far as I know, she doesn't know anyone there. Maybe she just wants
to relax." Michael answered calmly and seriously.
Emily could see that Michael was pretending to be calm.
After all, he was the one who saved Veda. He knew best the dangers of her traveling alone.
Michael didn't want that pain to happen again. He wanted to speed up and reach Everglade City to see Veda.
"I've slept so long, I'm not tired anymore. But you've been driving for almost nine hours. When we reach the service area, I'll take over. Don't push yourself. This isn't the time to be stubborn." Emily said.
Emily's words were sincere.
Michael didn't refuse.
At the next service area, he stopped the car and prepared to switch with Emily.
Emily could clearly see that Michael's legs were numb.
She felt sorry and quickly went to help him.
What do you think?
