Chapter 205
Kris's accusation hung in the air for several seconds as they stared at each other. His eyes were hard, demanding an answer.
"Is that what you think of me? That I would lie about...about our child dying?" Thalassa finally broke the silence, her voice barely above a whisper. Her throat tightened with emotion as she struggled to hold back her tears.
Kris finally pulled away from her, frustration radiating from his every movement. He threw his hands up in the air, pacing angrily.
"What the hell else am I supposed to think, Thalassa? You told me our child died in your womb after my mother's attack. But he's sitting in that living room, flesh and blood, looking at me like I'm some goddamn stranger. So, yeah! I don't know what the fuck else to think!"noveldrama
Thalassa stood frozen, each word hitting her like a punch. Her chest felt heavy, like it was hard to breathe. After a long moment, she took a deep, shaky breath and spoke, her voice trembling.
"I was pregnant with twins, Kris."
Kris stopped pacing, his gaze snapping back to hers, his eyes wide.
"I never knew," she continued, her eyes welling with tears. "When your mother had me attacked, I thought I'd lost the pregnancy. That's what the doctors told me. They said there was nothing left to save...I'd had a miscarriage."
She paused, struggling to find the right words as Kris stared at her, his face slowly draining of its anger. "I didn't realize I was still pregnant until months later, after I moved to New York. My belly started swelling, and then I found out I was still carrying a baby. The tests in Baltimore hadn't been able to detect that there was another fetus after the one I lost."
Her voice broke on the last words, and she swallowed hard, the weight of the memory crushing her. "We would've had twins, Kris. But I lost one of them because of your mother. Tell me, do you still think I'm cruel for wanting to get justice for the life of the one I lost?"
Kris's anger melted into confusion, pain flashing across his face as her words sank in. Slowly, his knees gave way, and he collapsed to the floor, his head falling into his hands as the sobs wracked his body. Thalassa watched him, her own tears slipping silently down her cheeks. She'd hurt him. Really, truly hurt him by keeping everything from him.
For a while, the only sound in the washroom was Kris's crying as his shoulders shook.
When Kris finally stopped, his breathing shaky, he lifted his head, red-eyed and drained. He struggled to his feet, swiping at his tear-streaked face.
"Did you ever plan to tell me about everything? About Alex?" He asked softly, his voice filled with sorrow. Thalassa opened her mouth to speak, but no words came out.
"Of course you weren't going to tell me," Kris said, answering his own question, his voice thick with bitterness. "That night...when we were together again, when we made love in this house..."
He scoffed, shaking his head. “.....I should've known. It wasn't because you wanted me. You just didn't want me to walk into Alex's room and find him. You endured letting me touch you and kiss just so I wouldn't see our son. And the next day, when I heard him cry...I asked you who it was. And you looked me in the eye and told me he was Betty's son."
He laughed, but it was a broken, hollow sound. "The funny thing is... deep down, I knew something wasn't right. But I didn't even want to think that you could hide something this big from me or worse, lieto me about it."
His words cut deep. Thalassa's tears fell faster now, and she couldn't stop them.
"What an idiot was," Kris muttered, shaking his head self-deprecatingly before wiping at his eyes once more. He looked back into her eyes. "You've kept our son away from me long enough, Lassa. Now that know the truth, I'm not going to aflow that anymore."
With that, he turned and walked out of the washroom, leaving Thalassa standing alone, her back still pressed to the cold wall. As the door closed, her knees buckled, and she slowly sank to the floor.
Her sobs came quietly, shoulders shaking as she buried her face in her hands.
What do you think?
