Secrets Of The Neglected Wife

Chapter 835

Chapter 835:

She knew the stakes; such a question was dangerous, a thin ice that could crack at any moment.

No one could hold a candle to Kellan. If he were here, he wouldn’t force her to choose. He’d be her steadfast ally. Only death could pull them apart.

This clarity made it easier for Allison to deceive Verruckt. “Just chalk up my words to tonight’s madness—”

She was abruptly interrupted.

“Is that why you’re shedding tears?”

Verruckt’s silver hair complemented his deep, crimson gaze as he looked down at Allison’s distressed face and scoffed. “Why worry about anything? I’m the top dog here. You’re better off sticking with me forever.”

Allison felt her anxiety spike. “But I don’t feel safe.”

He laughed, clearly oblivious to her fear.

In his typical dominant fashion, he moved her effortlessly onto his lap.

“Look, even if Mrs. Blake hadn’t dropped by today, no one would’ve touched me. I’d still have gotten us out safe and sound.”

Allison squirmed, trying to escape. Verruckt was as unpredictable as a storm. Perched on his lap, she felt that danger seemed imminent.

“Verruckt, at times, I’m at a loss about what you’re really up to,” Allison remarked, suppressing her urge to snap, feigning annoyance instead. “Remember when you plotted our demise, right along with the lab?”

“That was just playing it safe,” Verruckt replied, his gaze so intense that he seemed to memorize every feature of her face, even the flutter of her eyelashes.

“Sure, I can win this game we play, but sometimes fate likes to throw a wrench in the works.”

His hand tightened around her waist as he spoke. Cornered, Allison could only cling to his shirt, her mind racing for an escape. She listened as he finally began to open up a bit.

“My luck was rotten before I met you,” Verruckt said, chuckling lightly, his tone casual. “Everyone at Immortality Group thinks I’m just a lapdog for the mayor. I never saw it that way, but under the drug’s influence, I truly turned into a mad dog.” Without Allison, he feared that he might have lost his last vestige of humanity. As Verruckt spoke, he closed his eyes, revealing a rare moment of vulnerability.

This was the second time he’d let his guard down with Allison. If the first time was a test, this was clearly a moment he couldn’t control. To him, it was undoubtedly a fatal slip.

“I actually heard… I heard what Fiona said to you before she died,” Allison’s voice was soft, her eyes starting to redden. “They say this is a place for human experiments. If there’s any justice, the mayor would be the first to go, Josh the second, and you, you’d be third.” Her amber eyes locked onto Verruckt’s. “But I know that’s not who you are.”
