Alpha Liam POV
I stared at the invitation blankly, before glancing upwards at Logan whose expression was inscrutable. "This is a joke, right? Why would they think we would possibly go? Just because we approved the transfer doesn't mean that we have any interest in attending a girl's eighteenth birthday party' I added with a growl.
Perhaps agreeing to the transfer had been a mistake. Logan's eyes shone with genuine amusement. "I think they are simply trying to be kind. Maybe it will ease their minds to meet you beforehand so they know what kind of man their daughter is going to be following as an Alpha' he suggested.
"If they were that concerned they shouldn't have asked for a transfer in the first place" I snarled "you know exactly what my reputation is like. I'm hardly going to put myself in a position where I have to fend off multiple women who see me as nothing more than a way for them to elevate their status or wealth!"noveldrama
"Man that woman really did a number on you" Logan sighed, pinching the bridge of his nose while I stared at him, feeling outraged.
"She did nothing of the sort. I merely object to being used as a pawn or a stepping stone to a woman's ambitions" I snapped
"Bullshit," Logan said frankly "ever since that bitch rejected you, you've done nothing but lock yourself away and pout like a child" he declared.
My eyes narrowed. "I dare you to continue" I growled "and see what happens."
"Look man, I care about you. But you've stopped attending social events out of fear of women throwing themselves at you. I get it. Most of them suck and are shallow, vain or plain selfish. But this is just an invitation. It's hardly something to turn your nose up at. If you were a father, wouldn't you want to meet the man in charge of the pack your daughter was transferred to?" he argued.
I did not want to admit that maybe he had a point. However, if the fathers felt so inclined, why hadn't they come out here to meet me? Had they been banking on the fact that my father had been a good guy, so therefore his son must be? I sighed.
"If I go to this event, I'll be expected to attend others" I pointed out, shaking my head in resolution "I hate social events."
"You hate the women typically found at them" Logan corrected "what if this could be your chance to find your second chance mate?" he urged "at least consider it. At the very least, you can drink and have some fun. Let your hair down. Act like an irresponsible, fun adult. Do you remember what fun is?" he asked in exasperation.
I stared at him. "It's an eighteenth birthday party, Logan. How old do you think the girls going to the party are likely to be?" I -pointed out somewhat smugly as his mouth dropped open in alarm.
Seriously, he hadn't considered the party was going to be mainly attended by young teenage girls? Was my Beta an idiot? Never mind, the answer to that question was yes of course.
"Okay, so maybe I wasn't thinking too clearly" Logan drawled, looking slightly miffed "but there will be older women, perhaps friends of the Luna of the pack or helping with the festivities. Besides, it's better than staying here and doing nothing. Aren't you the least bit curious about Fiona Dominion?"
I hesitated. I wanted to deny it, but after looking through the girl's background, it was hard not to be intrigued by a girl like her. The difference between her and the full-blooded Dominion daughter was huge in comparison. Fiona worked odd jobs, volunteered at various charity events, and was by all accounts a sweet and d loving person and a kind pack member. Celeste Dominion, on the other hand, I frowned and shook my head. By all accounts, she too was described as sweet and kind, but there were no jobs, no acts of volunteering in her background. She was described as an adequate fighter but seeing as neither girl had their wolf yet, I hadn't expected them to be described as strong or outstanding. There was something about Celeste's portfolio that was off-putting. As thought the details it contained were too good to be true. Maybe I was being paranoid, I concluded, or unfair. After all Fiona's had glowing references as well, but hers seemed more down-to-earth and less
contrived.
"Maybe I am a linte interested in this girl and her reasons for leaving the pack," I said slonely that's still no reason to attend the party"
Your mother is threatening to set you up on blind dates again' Logan said, pinning me with a gaze 'she said if you don't start looking for a Luna, she'll start doing it for you.
I shuddered, remembering the last blind date she'd set up and the fiasco it had been. My mother bless her heart, was not the greatest character of people and only saw what was on the surface rather than what was inside their hearts.
"No." I said in protest while Lagan nodded, a grim expression on his face. I mean, after last time... my voice trailed off.
"She said this time she couldn't fail Logan supplied dryly, raising a brow and that she would search every pack if she had to, to find the perfect woman"
"Shit I muttered as Logan snorted "she's that desperate for me to take a Luna?"
"She wants grandchildren." Logan said bluntly "and I quote you not, she's not getting any younger. She wants to enjoy her grandchildren while she's still young enough to do so."
"She makes it sound as though she's frail and barely able to walk" 1 scoffed "she has plenty of time." "She doesn't seem to think so. I think your best bet is to go to this party. At the very least, it will stop her
for a little amount of time and let you have some breathing room. Besides" Logan paused "I've never been at this pack before either. You wouldn't leave me behind would you?" he teased.
"The hell I would" I muttered "I should tell mother you're ready to find a mate" I threatened, watching as Logan fell back in alarm. "It would serve you right" I glared.
"Come on man" Logan continued to coax me "it's one day out of your time. You know that the Gamma can take care of the pack while we're gone."
I opened my mouth answer when my mother suddenly came walking in, her eyes automatically darting to the invitation. Before either of us could say anything, she plucked it with her fingers out of my hand and peered at it with curiosity.
"An eighteenth birthday party" she sniffed, looking at me with disapproval, shaking her head. "I hope you weren't considering going to this Liam because it's going to be filled with nothing but slutty teenage girls" she huffed "hardly appropriate for somebody of your caliber. Besides" she looked meaningfully at the date "I was going to set you up on a date that day with a lovely girl I met in the market" she began.
That was enough to convince me that Logan was right. Before my mother could continue her tirade, I quickly interrupted.
"I'm going to the party" I hastily interjected.
If my mother disapproved, that was a bonus. My eyes met Logan's. He smirked at me. My mother's mouth
fell open. "Liam, surely not. I mean what can you hope to gain from such a frivolous party" she complained.
"I intend to take Logan and introduce myself to the girl whose about to become a new member of our
pack" I explained "and maybe I'll find my second chance mate while I'm there" I quoted Logan with a scowl on my face.
My mother frowned. "You never go to events" she protested eyeing me strangely.
"This time, I'm making an exception" my voice is tight "the mother and fathers are no doubt worried about what kind of Alpha I am. I thought I could put their minds at ease" I told her solemnly.
As well as avoid the blind date she was about to insist on forcing me to go to. I could see Logan struggling to hold in his laughter as I avoided looking at him.
"I guess that makes sense" my mother nodded agreeably at me "very well. I can rearrange the date for when you come back" she shrugged unfazed by my leave of absense.
Damn. She was going to insist then. I sighed. "Mother"
"No Liam. Don't even she warned me, shaking a finger once you come back, we'll start searching for a Lama property that think you can persuade me otherwise. Now go to that party and let me know how it goes. I'm looking toward to seeing the new member of the pack. She sounds sweet' she added, putting the invitation back on the desk and sauntering out at 1 watched her speechless.
"I thought my mother was bad, but yours takes the cake. I guess it was nice, you being single while it laued Lope wighed
I took the invitation, wadded it up and threw it at him in response. At least there would be nothing to worry about at a s innocent eighteenth birthday party, I thought sullenly. It was when I got back that I would have to worry myself with mother's constant interference. I had no idea that the birthday party would have an
impact on me or that it would change my life, simply because I chose to attend it.
