Lenora and Zachary Chapter 496
Chapter 496 Burning Passion
Lenora hadn't expected Sophia to act so swiftly. She had only been away on a business trip for two days, and in that short span, Sophia had already signed an agreement with Zephyr and met his parents. Casually skimming through the agreement, Lenora remarked, "I see the terms of the agreement seem quite favorable for you but isn't getting married next month a bit too soon?"
Meanwhile, Sophia nibbled on a cupcake. "I also feel it's too soon, um... but my half-brother isn't getting any younger, so there was no other way..."
"So, where will you guys live after getting married? Have you discussed it?" Lenora asked.
"We'll purchase a new house. We've arranged to go viewing tomorrow. Nora, would you like to join us? I could use your advice."
Lenora chuckled. "I would if I had the time, but the magazine publisher urged me to produce the photos quickly."
"All right, then."
As Sophia shifted toward her, she said excitedly, "He told me he checked out three residential areas. They were Inkstone Gardens, Willowbrook Estates, and River Creek Residences." "River Creek Residences? The one on the peninsula?"
"Yes," Sophia replied.
"Wow! Zephyr is that rich? He went all in," Lenora said, looking at Sophia with a playful glint. "Are you impressed?"
"I've taken a liking to the house," Sophia admitted. "It's a mansion worth a small fortune. However, it's too big for the two of us to live. Besides, we're not a real couple and won't have children, so it's not cost-effective." "Wow, are you already starting to save money for Zephyr?" Lenora teased.
"Lenora, you dare to make fun of me?" Sophia gave a sly smile, reaching out to tickle her.
"Don't, don't, my bad, my bad," Lenora pleaded for mercy, struggling to suppress her laughter as she dodged.
Sophia pinched her twice. Finding Lenora's skin supple, she released her grip and couldn't help but exclaim, "Tyrant Fuller is so lucky. I wish I could bury myself in it."
"Go to hell," Lenora retorted, a slight blush tinting her cheeks.
"But be honest, Soph, what do you think of Zephyr? Lenora continued seriously as she moved to the corner of the couch. "I think he sincerely wants to reconcile with you and is quite accommodating."noveldrama
Anyone can tell Zephyr's offer to help Sophia secure the company was merely a strategy to get into a contract marriage with her and spend more time together. It'll take several years from when he first joined the company until he has complete authority. During those years, they'll live together, facing each other day and night. It won't be hard for burning passion to ignite. Despite being fully aware of his intentions, Sophia still agreed.
With a calm expression, Sophia fell silent for a few seconds before sighing. "I don't know either. I resent him for leaving me without a single explanation back then, disappearing without a trace. I also resent him for abruptly reappearing in my life just when I was on the brink of forgetting him..."
Lenora seemed to understand what she meant.
She resents Zephyr's past action of leaving without a word, not the entirety of him as a person. Back in the day, Sophia had fallen for him when he was just a pauper. Now, Zephyr returned successful, handsome, and elegant with considerable wealth. He likes her, accommodates her, and pursues her relentlessly. Who could resist him?
Sophia had always thought Lenora was the biggest hopeless romantic in the entire world.
However, when the situation landed on her doorstep, she suddenly realized she was on par with the latter.
At half past five on Friday afternoon, Zachary received a call from Isla.
He picked up his phone and glanced at the caller ID. Silencing the ringtone, he placed it back on the table. The call ended automatically.
Roughly half a minute later, the screen lit up again. This time, the incoming call displayed Harrietta's number.
Zachary paused before pressing the green button. "What's wrong, Hattie?"
Isla's anxious voice echoed from the speaker. "Zachary, hurry to the hospital. Hattie was hit by a car and is currently undergoing emergency treatment!"
Upon hearing this, Zachary's expression changed. He stood up gravely, walking out while asking Isla which hospital it was.
Zachary arrived in front of the emergency department operating room twenty minutes later.
The operating room's light was still on. Isla was seated on a public bench, her hands tightly clutching at the hem of her clothes. Her face was pale, her lips pressed together, and her brows furrowed. She was consumed by worry and fear. Zachary strode over, inquiring solemnly, "What happened?"
Upon seeing him approach, Isla stood up, her explanation spilling out in a flustered rush. "When school ended, I went to pick Hattie up for dinner. There was no parking at the restaurant, so I parked across the street in the square. A car shot out of nowhere as we crossed at the traffic lights. My mind went blank, and when I reacted, Hattie was already lying on the ground..."
Her eyes brimmed with tears and overcome with guilt, Isla continued, choking on her words, "Zachary, I didn't mean for this to happen. I never anticipated such a thing."
"Did you call the police?" he asked.
"I... I forgot, Isla confessed, wringing the hem of her dress in a state of helplessness. "All I could think of at that moment was to rush Hattie to the hospital and forgot to call the police." en
At that time, her car was right nearby. Calling the emergency number would have taken much longer. Zachary pulled out his phone from his pocket, dialing a number as he headed toward the emergency exit. After calling the police, he dialed Miles' number.
Isla looked visibly tense, occasionally glancing in Zachary's direction.
Once he had finished giving instructions, Zachary returned to the entrance of the operating room.
Isla asked, "Were you calling the police?"
""Yes."
He looked at Isla and continued, "None of this is your fault, but you're incapable of caring for Hattie alone. Have someone with you when you bring Hattie out in the future." Isla hummed and nodded hastily, wiping the corners of her eyes. "I've got it. Please let Hattie be fine."
Zachary said nothing, taking a seat off to the side to wait.
About half an hour later, the red light outside the operating room turned green. A nurse wheeled Harrietta out, the girl hooked up to an IV drip. Her round little head was wrapped in a bandage, exposing only herfacial features.
"You must be the patient's family, right? She's currently out of immediate danger, but her physical injuries are severe and require significant rest and recovery," the nurse said. Isla breathed a sigh of relief. "Thank goodness."
Harrietta was wheeled into a ward.
Zachary recalled Harrietta's usual lively and spirited demeanor. Seeing her now, pale and unconscious, his heart ached. He asked the nurse, "When will she wake up?"
The nurse replied, "Within half an
hour to an hour. If she wakes up in
severe pain, administer the
painkillers to her. She can only eat four hours after the surgery, starting with iquids and easily digestible food."
"Okay."
Zachary pulled a chair over to the bedside in the ward and sat down, while Isla sat on another chair.
The two of them kept watch over Harrietta together.
And so, the ward descended into silence for a while until a phone's ringtone shattered its tranquility.
Isla's fingers curled subconsciously, her gaze filled with worry as she looked toward the source of the sound.
Zachary moved to the window and answered the call. "What's the matter?"
A knot formed in Isla's heart, her dress hem crumpled under her anxious grip, losing shape.
"Got it. I'll have my assistant reach out to you shortly."
He ended the call and slid his phone back into his pocket.
"Is it the police?" Isla asked, barely hiding her sigh of relief.
Zachary nodded. "Yes. They've retrieved the surveillance footage and identified the culprit's vehicle license plate number."
"That's good. He must be made to face the consequences."
As Isla spoke, the notification sound from her phone echoed.
Her heart skipped a beat, and she subtly glanced at Zachary.
Seeing that he wasn't paying attention to her, she took out her phone and glanced at the message before swiftly tucking it back into her pocket, as if she had received a spam text.
It was a success.
She cast her gaze downward, a subtle delight flashing across her eyes.
What do you think?
