Nora noticed something was wrong and asked, "Elaine, did you find out about him and that widow?"
Nora really was my best friend. She knew exactly where my bottom line lay. "He gave Selene a house. That house was supposed to be mine," I said simply. Nora was silent for a moment before grinding her teeth. "You..."
She didn't finish, but I knew what she meant.
"I won't give him another chance," I said firmly.
"Men like him are scumbags. If you forgive him, he'll just do it again," Nora said, her tone sharp.
"I know."
"Alright. Take his call and see what he has to say. Then come find me," Nora said after a pause. "I'll swap half a shift with someone."
I wanted to tell her it wasn't necessary, but she'd already hung up.noveldrama
Logan' calls kept coming. Finally, I answered, "Hello..."
"What are you doing, Elaine? What's the meaning of this?" Logan' yelling was so loud I had to hold the phone away from my ear.
I waited for him to calm down before speaking. "Logan, I agreed to marry you yesterday in front of your parents, but that was to give us both one last
chance."
"Spare me the nonsense. Where are you? Why didn't you come to get the marriage certificate?" he demanded angrily.
It seemed Victor and Selene hadn't mentioned my visit to the house. I didn't bring it up either. Instead, I replied, "I went to Celestial Church and listened to sermons with Mr. Cain."

There was silence on the other end. Logan knew his lie had been exposed.
"Elaine, listen to me... he started.
"There's nothing left to say," I cut him off. "I'm tired of your excuses. It's over, Logan. We're done.*
"Elaine!" he shouted, his tone desperate.
"Oh, by the way," I continued calmly, "I've organized all my work and sent it to the respective emails. You have a copy too-"
"Elaine, what are you doing?" Logan interrupted angrily.
"I'm... taking my annual leave," I said lightly.
"You're doing this on purpose, aren't you?" he sneered.
I didn't respond, but I could faintly hear the sound of him yanking off his tie in frustration. "Fine. If you want to throw tantrums, keep it up."
There was a loud bang as he slammed the phone down, ending the call.
I smiled faintly and looked up at the sky. A bird flew past, free and
unrestrained.
I could be free too. I just needed to leave Logan and the Mercer family behind. The Mercers had provided for me for years, but I'd always felt like a bird in a cage, unable to spread my wings. Starting today, I would fly free and explore the world I'd always yearned for.
I drove to find Nora. She had skipped work for me, and I needed to let her see me so she wouldn't worry. Nora knew how much I loved Logan. Even though I acted like everything was fine, she must have feared I wasn't coping well. "You got here fast. Did you run red lights the whole way?" Nora teased.
"Yes. But you're worth it," I replied lightly.
Nora was speechless for a moment before pulling me into a hug.

I closed my eyes and leaned against her shoulder. "I'm not that fragile, really..." I said softly.
And it was true. My heart didn't ache. There was no bitterness, no suffocating pain. I felt... nothing. It was as if I'd simply lost a business deal.
Nora took off her white coat, slung her bag over her shoulder, and climbed into the car with me. But then my phone rang. It was the Mercer family.
Nora glanced at the screen and said, "If you don't want to answer, don't."
I hesitated for a moment. "I have to face it eventually..."
With a sigh, I answered the call.
