Although I was only a foster child in this family, Logan' parents had always treated me with the care and love of biological parents. They made me feel like their own daughter.
I remembered how Logan' brother, Miles Mercer, used to joke about how both he and Logan had fallen out of favor since I arrived in this house.
Nora was right. I might have broken up with Logan, but breaking away from the Mercer family wouldn't be easy.
Taking a deep breath, I pushed the door open. Everyone turned to look at
1. me.
Tessa got up and walked over. "Elaine, you're back. We've been waiting for you for dinner."

"Hey, Tessa. Ethan," I greeted them both.
Logan also stood when Ethan nudged him. He walked over and took the bag from my hand. "Why are you back so late?"
"I was playing pool," I replied calmly. I knew Caleb had probably already told him about our meeting, so there was no point in hiding it.
Logan frowned. "Next time, call me to come along."
He didn't like me doing these things, especially without him. Of course, he didn't want me interacting privately with his friends.
And yet, he had no issue gallivanting with his late best friend's wife. He had even given her his supplementary card-something he'd never given to me.
I didn't respond to him and walked toward the bathroom instead.
Logan followed me, asking, "What's wrong?"
"Nothing, I'm fine," I said as I washed my hands. I smiled faintly at his reflection in the mirror.

"Elaine, I've already explained everything. Can't you just let it go?"
Hearing his words, I lowered my gaze. As I rubbed my fingers, I noticed a small scar on my left middle finger. It was from four years ago when Logan had accidentally closed a drawer on my hand while rushing to deal with Victor Langston, his secretary, during a work crisis.
I didn't say a word.
Seeing my silence, Logan lowered his gaze as well. "Elaine, what do you want me to do? Just tell me, okay?"
His tone was feeble, helpless, and even a bit resigned. It was a side of him I rarely saw.
"Logan, we've broken up. You don't need to feel so conflicted. You can take care of her however you want," I said, voicing my thoughts.
He shook his head and stepped closer, trapping me between the washbasin and his chest. "Don't even think about it. We're getting married tomorrow."
"Logan, do you really want to marry me?" I asked bluntly, echoing the conversation I had overheard between him and Caleb. Without hesitation, I continued, "We're so familiar with each other that you're no longer interested in sleeping with me, aren't you?"
"Elaine, I told you that was just a joke. You saw how I reacted to you that night-"
"Logan," I interrupted, not wanting to think about what happened that night. "That night was a nightmare I can never erase from my life. Do you understand me?"
His pupils contracted. He looked lost as he finally asked, "What do you want me to do so you can forgive me and stop talking about breaking up?"
I had already told him, but he kept asking. Not wanting to repeat myself, I pushed him away. "Step aside. I'm hungry. I want to eat something."
"Fine. I won't contact Selene anymore," he announced suddenly. Taking out

his phone, he opened WhatsApp and went to his contact list. In front of me, he blocked Selene's number. "Is that better now?"
Listening to the frustration in his tone, I smiled bitterly. "Logan, are you afraid your parents will give you an earful if I tell them about the breakup? Don't worry-I can hold off on telling them."
"Elaine, that's not what I meant. I want to marry you." Logan paused, his voice softening. "Even though we haven't gotten the certificate, haven't had a wedding, and haven't even... been intimate, in my heart, I've long since considered you my... wife." My heart trembled at the word 'wife'.
Before my parents passed away, Dad had never referred to Morn as his wife in public. He would always introduce her as his spouse.
Dad used to say that being someone's 'wife' was the highest and most formal recognition. It was different from being someone's girlfriend, spouse, or missus.
Logan had just said he had long considered me his wife. He wouldn't say that if he didn't truly mean it.
My hardened heart began to crack slightly.
"Elaine, we've heard about what happened at the company yesterday, and we scolded Logan too. He knows that he was wrong," Tessa said as she brought up the issue at the dinner table.
"It's okay, Tessa. I didn't take it to heart," I replied. Despite seeing them as my real parents, I couldn't bring myself to be as spoiled in front of them as a biological daughter might be. But discontent was still discontent.
"Elaine is a sensible girl. She's been with Logan for so many years. I'm sure they understand each other," Ethan said, trying to reassure everyone.
"That's why I'm worried someone else will sweep her off her feet! She's an amazing person. Logan needs to hurry up and marry her," Tessa added skillfully, redirecting the conversation to tomorrow's wedding registration. 09:20noveldrama

I looked back at him. "Logan, in front of Ethan and Tessa, please confirm your true feelings. Do you really want to marry me?"
"What are you saying, Elaine? Logan, say something quickly," Tessa urged, worry in her tone.
Logan kept his gaze on me, his eyes deep with emotions I couldn't quite decipher. "Elaine, I want you to be my wife. Please don't refuse."
As he spoke, everyone at the table turned to look at me, waiting for my
response.
