Chapter 576
She closed her eyes and took a deep breath. Her voice was soft, almost a whisper, as she swallowed hard, "I'm sorry, Dr. Campbell."
"It's really my fault. I shouldn't have... in a moment of desperation, rushed into this. You're such a good person, and you deserve a better woman."
"I have a child now. I can't just live for myself anymore. Once they're here, it's my duty to see it through, right?"
Her voice carried a hint of regret, though not a trace of remorse. Even if she could turn back time, she'd still choose to have little Mateo.
Callum's grip tightened. He understood her reasoning, but accepting it was another matter. He was never a choice in her book.
Suddenly, he grabbed her slender shoulders, turning her to face him. His dark eyes bore into hers. "Selena, have you ever... even a little bit... liked me?"
He'd adored her for so long. From love to obsession. But always missing the mark. At first, he quietly protected her. Later, he tried every trick in the book, but no matter what, he couldn't hold her close.
And Everett? Everett was always the forceful one, taking what he wanted. His ways were darker, more sinister. Why should he be the winner!
Selena's feelings for Dr. Campbell were always complicated. From the moment he entered her life, like a knight, always there to help and protect her, it was impossible for her not to feel anything. But the timing was never right. When she loved Everett, her heart had no room for anyone else. By the time she let go of that mistake, her heart was full with little Mateo.
Once a woman has a child, her feelings about love tend to fade. Of course, after all his years of waiting, she wasn't heartless. There were moments when she was moved, not entirely without affection. But...
Selena looked into his eyes, filled with longing, and chose to lie, "No."noveldrama
The Dr. Campbell she knew was a gentleman, like moonlight in human form. She couldn't let him spiralinto the madness of unrequited love-a pain she knew too well, one that could destroy a person.
Thankfully, they'd just begun. Cutting their losses now meant he could find happiness later.
Callum's eyes widened. Even though he'd always known Selena's heart wasn't his, which drove him to desperate measures, hearing her denial still tore him apart.
He regretted it. When he found out she was going back home, he shouldn't have let her leave. If she had stayed abroad, even if she didn't like him, she'd eventually remain by his side, not be taken away by Everett again.
His mind raced with dark thoughts. Finally, he spread his arms and pulled her slender body into a tight embrace.
Selena froze, "Dr. Campbell..."
She tried to pull away, but Callum's grip only tightened, his cheek resting against her shoulder, where tears began to fall. "Selena, just one last time, let me hold you. Don't push me away..."
He pleaded. Tears welled up in Selena's eyes too. In him, she saw her past self-just as lowly and covered in dust.
She didn't move, standing quietly. There was nothing else she could do, except offer him this last bit of comfort.
