Marrying the Man in the Dark

Chapter 1222

Chapter 1222 Death Do Us Part

Charles Luther could hardly recognize the withered figure of his beloved Maeve. The sight of her frail body filled his eyes with tears.

He was the one who had caused her to end up like this. It was all his doing. He had caused this to happen to her. Him!

"Did you want to say something to me?"

Maeve rested against the headboard with her eyes closed, looking to avoid seeing him altogether. "I don't have long to live, Charles."

Charles sobbed uncontrollably. His knees dropped to the floor with a loud thud as tears continued to flow down his face as he looked up at Maeve. "I was wrong. My dear wife, it was all my fault. I never meant for this to happen.

"But I know that no matter how I try to explain, it won't take the pain away. Should you be able to forgive me, I hope you will. If forgiveness is out of reach, please tell me how I can help alleviate your suffering. All I want is for you to live well."

Charles was a tall man, standing at a height of around six feet, yet he lay bent on the floor, weeping like a child.

Maeve kept her eyes shut, tears silently streaming down her cheeks. "I understand that being with a sickly person like me must be burdensome for you. I am not able to give birth again. I cannot fulfill your needs. And I definitely cannot take care of you as other wives do. It's understandable if you're unhappy with me."

Charles's eyes blazed with outrage. "No! My dear wife, I have never been dissatisfied with you!"

"Be quiet," Maeve's cold voice cut through the air, her eyes still shut. She had once been a formidable CEO. Even now, bedridden and gravely ill, she exuded an air of authority.

"Being with someone like me, who's living on borrowed time, I do not fault you for looking for someone else. If she's someone worthy, I'd even be happy for you. I only ask that she treats our daughter kindly. But I never imagined... Charles Luther, that you would be so hasty.

"In that case, how could I not let you go?" Maeve offered a faint smile, her eyes filled with profound despair.

The next second, she picked up the fruit knife from the table and pointed it at her heart. "Tell me, if I take my own life, won't that mean I didn't

burden of failing to save a life." noveldrama

"No!" Charles's eyes widened in fear as he rushed forward, seizing the fruit knife from Maeve's grasp and forcefully twisting it around. The tip of the knife was now aimed at Charles's own body.

Gritting his teeth, he declared,

"Maeve, if you want to die, you'll

have to kill me first! I know I messed up this time. I don't know how to make it right, how to ease your pain. perhaps I should join you in death!"

Charles wrested the knife and aimed it at his own heart, thrusting it in as deeply as he could.

"Charles!" Maeve's eyes widened in shock as she tried to stop him, but in her weakened state, she was no match for a healthy man such as Charles.

The knife pierced Charles's skin. Despite the agony he must be in, he seemed to feel nothing and continued to push.

Suddenly, a powerful, calloused hand clasped his own. Determined to die, Charles tried to drive the knife deeper, but he found himself unable to muster the strength.

In a chilling tone, Damien's voice echoed in his ear, "Dying in front of my sister? Are you trying to shorten her life? Have you ever considered how much she cares for you and how significant you are to her?"

Charles wavered, automatically turning towards Maeve.

Her face was already streaked with tears.
