Sworn Enemy Novel 182
Chapter 182 The Man
Sonya didn't have time to think. She quickly pulled Milton into an alley to hide.

It was the same car, the black one. It jumped the curb and came charging onto the sidewalk. But they were quick enough to dodge, and the car swerved and sped past. Just as Sonya was catching her breath, the car turned around and stopped across the street.
The window rolled down to reveal a man with a pockmarked face, wearing sunglasses. He gave her a smug grin before rolling the window back up and speeding off. Watching the car disappear, a chilling thought crossed Sonya's mind.
The man wasn't targeting Larissa. He was after her.
Why Larissa, though? Sonya's mind raced back to two weeks ago when Odette had mysteriously died in her house, and she'd become a suspect. Larissa had gone to the police to vouch for her.
Had it all been a coincidence? Or was this connected?noveldrama
She didn't have time to think it over. Milton, still shaken by the encounter, was pale and trembling.
Sonya quickly comforted him and led him back to the clinic.
After hearing about Larissa's situation, the neighbors came to offer their help and said they'd watch over Milton.
With them around, at least Sonya could get some rest.
In the following days, Sonya made several trips to the police station regarding Larissa's case. The suspect hadn't been found, and the people Larissa owed money to had been cleared of suspicion after questioning. Larissa's body couldn't stay at the morgue forever. After consulting with the police, Sonya arranged for her cremation and sent her ashes back to her hometown for burial.
"What are you planning to do with the kid?"
In the car, Calvin sat in the passenger seat, glancing back at Milton, who was sitting quietly in the back.
Sonya looked at him in the rearview mirror. Milton's lips were pressed tight, his eyes staring out the window, but his ears were perked up.
"I promised his mom I'd take care of him. I intend to keep that promise."
"But you can't just raise him like your own son."
"So what? Milton's a good kid. I'll treat him like a godson. Is that a problem?"
"Uh, you might want to think this through."
Sonya shook her head, signaling for him to drop it.
Milton had just lost his mother, and he was fragile. The least she could do was give him a sense of security. Of course, she wasn't going to raise him as her own. He still had a biological father. But she wasn't sure if that father could be trusted. After all, he had abandoned them.
The car stopped in front of the villa. Sonya told Milton to go inside and asked Calvin to check on Milton's biological father at MIT, to at least get an idea of what kind of person he was.
"You're going all in on this, aren't you?" Calvin didn't quite get it.
Sonya thought for a moment and then shared her suspicions with him.
"If Larissa really died because she testified for me, then I-"
"That doesn't seem likely," Calvin disagreed. "Larissa's testimony didn't help you that much. If anyone was supposed to be targeted, it should have been that guy who played basketball, not her." Suddenly, Sonya remembered the man he was talking about.
"You just reminded me. I need to go to the police station."
She told Calvin to stay with Milton while she went to the station.
At the police station, she shared her suspicions, but the officers thought they were a stretch. They called the man, who gave them permission to share his number with Sonya.
After leaving the station, Sonya found a quiet place to call him.
"Hello, Ms. Ella, right?" The man spoke first.
Sonya responded but then hesitated, unsure of what to say. After thinking about it, she realized her suspicions were just that, suspicions. She

"I... I just wanted to invite you to dinner, to thank you for testifying."
"I told you, no need to thank me."
"Well, when would you be free?"
There was a short pause, like he was checking his schedule.
"How about Saturday afternoon?"
"That works for me. I'll book the restaurant and send you the details." "Okay."
He sounded like he was in a hurry and ended the call quickly.
When Sonya returned to the villa, she found Calvin was about to leave.

The boy was sitting quietly on the couch, staring off into space. Sonya tried to talk to him, but he only gave short answers. After a while, he turned to her and asked, "Sonya, can I take a bath?" "Of course. Let's go upstairs and get you cleaned up.'
Sonya led Milton upstairs. Since she didn't have any clothes for him, she called Calvin to pick up some new ones for him from the mall.
Calvin came back quickly, and Sonya helped Milton try on the clothes while he went to the kitchen to cook.
Calvin took a moment to familiarize himself with the kitchen, then started looking for an apron. He found a blue one in the cabinet, one that seemed made for men. It looked good, so he put it on. He washed and chopped the veggies, then heated up the pan. As the oil sizzled, he tossed the greens in, the sound of them hitting the hot oil filling the room.
He heard footsteps behind him but didn't turn around. He called out, Sonya, how do Milton's new dothes fit?
Especially the pants. I think they're a little long, but the store said we can exchange them if needed."
'Hey, set the table. We're almost ready to eat."
Calvin called out a few more times, but when he got no response, he turned around and froze. Sonya was standing there, her expression cold as
ice.
He stiffened and then laughed nervously. "Mr. Sullivan, uh, what are you doing here?"
Henry's face darkened, his gaze sharp.
"Do I need to check in with you when I come home?"
"No, of course not. But this... doesn't seem like your house, does it?"
That was enough to push Henry over the edge.
Just as he was about to lose his temper, Sonya came downstairs with Milton. She paused when she saw him and asked the same thing.
"What are you doing here?"
Henry clenched his jaw, trying to keep his cool.
Sonya thought something serious was happening, so she motioned for Milton to sit in the living room before stepping outside with Henry. "Let's talk outside."
When they got to the yard, Sonya noticed Henry's dark expression and assumed something serious had happened, so she urged him to speak quickly.
"You... you let another man wear my apron!"
Sonya was silent for a long moment before finally speaking.
"That's what this is about?"
"Do you understand what 'offending' means? He wore my apron. That's offensive!"
Just get to the point if you have something to say, or leave if you don't, Sonya said, starting to get frustrated. Henry huffed, clearly annoyed, before saying, "I came to get my stuff."

Sonya paused. "You didn't come here just for your apron, did you?"
What do you think?
