Chapter 540 You Must Love Yourself First
Harlan let out a helpless smile. "When Janice stripped down in front of me, I didn't even spare her a second glance. So, who do you think I like?
"It was Zoey's soul that gave her body its unique charm. I started to find her interesting, as if she were glowing from within. At the time, I didn't know she had swapped souls. I even thought Janice was deliberately playing games, trying to trap me. By the time I realized something was off, I was already deeply in love with her."
As Harlan spoke, he cupped his cheek, his expression troubled. "But I still don't get what's on her mind. Sometimes, it feels like she likes me too, but when it comes time to confess, she just pushes me away. Chloe, you're one of her closest friends. Can you tell me why?"
I knew the answer, but I couldn't make the decision for Zoey.
We now had a way to break the death curse-by swapping lives. If I told Harlan the truth, what if he offered to swap his life for hers, but she didn't want it?
This was a matter of life and death, and I couldn't make that choice for her. If something went wrong, I wouldn't be able to shoulder the responsibility.
Whether two people could be together was about more than just love-fate also played its part.
Seeing me remain silent, Harlan grew anxious and scratched his head. "Chloe, you must know the reason, right? Can you just tell me, please?"
I found an excuse. "Maybe it's because..."
"Because of what? Tell me already!"
"Because you fart and snore when you sleep. She just can't accept a man like that. My Carl doesn't snore."
Sorry, Zoey, I had to make up something.
Harlan was like a simple-minded creature, much easier to handle than someone like Carter, who had a sharper mind.
He looked dumbfounded. "I fart and snore when I sleep?"
"Yep."
"Is that why she won't sleep with me and won't accept me?"
I nodded. "You don't think it's a big deal, but think about it. If you two were to live together for the rest of your lives, she'd have to listen to your snoring and smell your farts every night. Isn't that a kind of torture?"
"Chloe, keep it down. Don't let anyone hear you. I've got my pride."
"Okay, I'll keep it down."
"Is that all? Nothing else?"
I added a few more made-up details. "You only have six-pack abs, right?"
"She even told you that?"
I cleared my throat. "Well, she prefers men with eight-pack abs."
Harlan responded, "I can work on that."
"You have a short temper. She likes someone who's emotionally stable."
Harlan said, "Alright, I'll change."
"Your skin isn't very fair. She likes fair-skinned men."
Harlan was on the verge of a breakdown. "Alright, I'll go get skin whitening! Is there anything else?"
"Actually, she doesn't like men. She likes women."
Harlan instinctively replied, "Alright, then I'll get a sex change ... Chloe, are you messing with me?"
I laughed. "So you finally figured it out. If a person truly loves you, she will like you as you are. If she doesn't like you, none of your changes will matter. Harlan, if you love someone with all your heart, she will definitely feel it. But before you love someone, you must first love yourself."
"How did you and Carter end up together?"
I looked up at Carter, who had just returned from his morning jog. He was dressed in sportswear, looking dashing.
He quickly pulled himself out of his pain because he knew he still had me and the kids. He couldn't allow himself to be consumed by sorrow.
That was the kind of person he was always burying negative emotions deep
inside and always showing his best side to those he loved.
I smiled faintly. "Carter and I? It was a destined love."
Harlan looked at me with a confused gaze. I set down my knife and fork and stood up. "The steak is overcooked."
Carter approached, sweat still clinging to his forehead. I used a napkin to wipe it away.
"Join me for breakfast?"
"Sure."
The backyard gradually came to life as everyone started waking up. Bill chased after Axel, shouting, "Kiddo, slow down."
Axel had Nicholas's features-delicate and refined. He was unusually attached to Bill, which was quite strange.
In contrast, Lucian, Bill's own son, was more independent than Axel.
Bill clearly knew Axel's identity. When he caught up with the child, he gently wiped Axel's face and hands with a warm towel and even playfully pinched his small nose.
"Little troublemaker, if you don't wash your face next time, Daddy will be upset."
Seeing Bill's stern expression, Axel quickly wrapped his arms around Bill's and whimpered, "Daddy, hug me."
Bill scooped Axel up effortlessly, and the little one wrapped his arms around Bill's neck, planting a kiss on his cheek.
At that moment, Lucian, who had failed to catch the butterfly, also wanted attention. He clung to Bill's leg and said, "Hug."
Bill looked at Lucian's smudged face and nudged him aside with his foot. "Go play
by yourself."
I was at a loss for words.
What is going on here?
It seemed that Bill's favorite was Axel, not Lucian.
"What are you looking at?" Carter handed me the peeled egg, and I voiced my confusion.
Carter enlightened me. "Take another good look at Axel."
Lucian was like a miniature version of Bill, while Axel resembled Philippa more, with only a hint of Nicholas's traits.
"I get it now. Bill likes Axel because he looks more like Philippa."
If you love someone, you love everything associated with them.
I couldn't help but sigh softly. "I never realized it, but Bill's a total romantic." "You're absolutely right."
Everyone thought Bill was a playboy, but little did they know, he never even touched that woman.
Bill wasn't any brighter than Harlan; they both had single-track minds.
Zoey came downstairs with a yawn, looking tired and sluggish. She
grabbed the egg Carter had jus*\. ne?
peeled for me and popped it into her mouth.
Carter's forehead twitched in annoyance.
Had it not been for me borrowing Zoey's body, he would've already tossed her
out.
"When are you leaving?" Sure enough, he started ushering her to leave.
Chewing the egg, Zoey responded, "What's this? You're kicking me out?"
Carter couldn't stand her attitude. "Finish eating before you speak."

I quickly intervened. "Carl, I really loved the little town Mom stayed in last time, Caelkirk. We left in such a
rush before. Can we stay a litt
longer this time?" noveldrama
Carter gazed at me, immediately understanding my intention.
"Alright."
"Let's have our wedding under that tree. This time, we don't need to invite anyone
else, just close family and friends."
He nodded. "Alright."
It was time to fulfill that thousand-year-old promise.
What do you think?
