Her tears sparked panic in Callias's eyes.

In four years together, he'd never seen Skylar look so defeated and heartbroken.

She'd always been vibrant and smiling around him, afraid he'd doubt her feelings if she

showed weakness.

Though unsure what changed, he instinctively pulled her close. "I'm sorry, baby. Don't cry, I was just angry hearing you call her that. It won't happen again, I promise."

He leaned in for another kiss, gentler this time.

But Skylar pushed him away.

"It's my time of the month."

"Still? It's been a while."

"Yeah, maybe because of the fever."

Remembering how sick she'd been, concern flickered across his face.

He didn't push further, just guided her to bed and turned off the lights, holding her close.

Skylar was exhausted, falling asleep instantly.

Watching her peaceful face in the soft glow of the nightlight, Callias felt something stir in

him.

Memories flooded his mind until 3 AM, when he finally kissed her forehead and drifted off.

The morning sun through the uncovered windows woke him.

She was still asleep beside him, shifting slightly, making his numb arm tingle.

His eyes shot open when he saw it was nine why hadn't his body clock woken him at five like usual?

Remembering the family's breakfast time, Callias hurried out of bed.

He crept toward his room down the hall.

A few steps later, his stepmom appeared at the stairs, freezing at the sight of him leaving

her daughter's room.

"Callias?!"

His heart stopped as he noticed his rumpled sleepwear.

Her face darkened with suspicion.

"Callias? Why are you coming out of Skylar's room!"

His sleep-fogged brain struggled for an explanation.

Suddenly, the door opened behind him.

Skylar emerged, fully dressed, looking calmly at them both.

"Morning, Mom."

"Geez, Cal, you didn't have to rush when you came to wake me for breakfast."

Relief washed over her mother's face. Just a misunderstanding.

"Come on, breakfast is ready," she beckoned.

Skylar took her mother's arm as they headed downstairs.

They stopped short - Victoria sat at the table, smiling brightly.

"Skylar! Hope you don't mind, I came to discuss wedding plans with Cal."

Before Skylar could respond, her mother jumped in. "Why would she mind? She's his sister, you're his fiancée it's perfectly natural!" Skylar forced a smile.

Right. She was just the sister now. Nothing to mind at all.

She sat quietly, listening as Victoria peppered Callias with questions.

"Babe, what do you think - garden wedding or beach? And for the ring, diamonds or colored

stones?"
