Redemption 27

Book2 Chapter19

What was he getting at now? I wondered, feeling a familiar unease creeping in.

I reluctantly powered off my tablet and slid under the covers beside him, the space between us feeling like a chasm.

Leo drifted off quickly, his breathing even, but sleep eluded me

entirely.

It had been almost six months since we'd last shared a bed, and the

unfamiliarity was jarring.

It felt strange, almost unnatural, having him beside me again.

No matter how much I tried, I couldn't find any comfort in his

presence.

Finally, I gave up and quietly slipped out of bed to find my sleeping

pills.

Just as I began to move, Leo's hand shot out, grabbing my wrist and pulling me back down.

"Where are you going?" He demanded, his voice laced with suspicion.

"I can't sleep," I whispered," I was going to get my melatonin."

"You need pills now, just to sleep next to me?"

He frowned, his frustration evident as he turned away from me,

finally releasing my wrist.

With a loud thud, Leo stormed out of the bedroom, his footsteps heavy with anger.

He slammed the door so hard it echoed through the house.

For months, Leo had stumbled home drunk late at night, barely

uttering a word to me.

I'd once told him the smell of alcohol was unbearable and asked him

to stop drinking so much.

The very next day, he silently moved all his things into the guest room.

It wasn't the alcohol that truly bothered me.

It was knowing that the night before, it was Luna who had helped him

"Sorry about last night. Leo was just being a good friend, drinking for me. Hope you don't mind!" Luna's words dripped with sweetness, but the smug glint in her eyes was unmistakable.

That same night I noticed the telltale smudge of her lipstick on his shirt collar, a crimson mark that felt like a punch to the gut.
