"Where are you? Why aren't you home yet?"

Leo's voice pierced through the din of the bar, sharp and clear.

Had he gotten home already?

This is the first time he'd ever gotten home before me.

"I've been calling and messaging you. Where are you? Why didn't you pick up?”

I glanced at my phone. He had called several times.

“I'm with Emma. She got pretty drunk, so I'm taking her home."

"Where are you? I'll come get you.'

His voice carried a hint of urgency, something I hadn't heard from

him in ages.

I'm at The Whiskey Tavern on Riverside Drive. It's far, Leo. I'll just grab a cab and head home"

I reflexively tried to decline.

I didn't want to wait for him in the bar-it would take forever for him

to get here. I'd rather just take a cab and get home faster.
